Our Share the Plate Partner for March is “Razom” (‘Together’) for Ukraine

Razom, which means “together” in Ukrainian, believes deeply in the enormous potential of dedicated volunteers around the world united by a single goal: to unlock the potential of Ukraine. Razom works towards that mission by creating spaces where people meet, partner and do.

Razom was born out of the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 when millions of people worked together and risked their lives to build a pathway to a better future for Ukraine. Maidan successfully cleared the path for new leadership and reforms, and inspired countless citizens to get involved in the process. Soon after, in an effort to stifle and punish Ukraine’s progress, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and began a war in Eastern Ukraine that it continues to fund and sustain today. The current Russian war on Ukraine, beginning in February 2022, has thus far resulted in 10,600 Ukrainian civilians being killed, of whom 600 were children.

With such conditions some might think the odds are stacked against Ukraine, but Razom is here to break that narrative. Every day we see individuals and organizations working to create opportunities and a better future for themselves and their communities. Our mission is to help accelerate their individual and collective contributions through projects that unlock Ukraine’s potential and build toward a more prosperous, democratic nation.

Some Current Projects:

Razom Health supports hospitals and other healthcare institutions that serve the civilian population in Ukraine. What started in 2016 as a training program for Ukrainian neurosurgeons has grown into a multifaceted initiative responding to a humanitarian crisis.

Razom Heroes is delivering life-saving aid to the first responders and front-line medics.

Razom Relief aims to help local Ukrainian volunteer organizations to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the war. The Razom Relief mission is to support local NGOs and volunteer organizations that help civilians and strengthen Ukrainian civil society. In 2022, Razom provided grants in the amount of $4.9 million to 123 organizations that delivered humanitarian aid, evacuated people from hot zones, provided medical assistance, and renovated housing.

The Razom with You program is designed to provide mental health support to individuals, both children and adults, who have been affected by war. We provide both group and individual therapy sessions at our centers, as well as on-site sessions at locations such as centers for internally displaced persons and hospitals.

Ukrainian Response Initiative: Since late February 2022, Razom volunteers realized there would be a need to support a wave of displaced Ukrainians (DUs) to the US. Razom partnered with another Ukrainian nonprofit, Ukrainian Jersey City, and started providing assistance to newly arriving displaced Ukrainians on both sides of the river. Razom promoted, hosted, and facilitated multiple immigration webinars and legal clinics that provided DUs with the most up-to-date information as well as free legal services. This initiative has provided the following hands-on help:

  • Backpacks for school-age children & hygienic items

  • Referrals to housing assistance, shelters, referrals to a group of local landlords

  • Immigration assistance for 200+ Displaced Ukrainians

  • Educational assistance

  • Work assistance (Referrals to local small businesses. Online and offline events)

  • Negotiating with potential partners/sponsors
