Memorial Garden in December by Jane W.
It’s winter at Still Spring Garden, and the flower beds are lying fallow. Resting for the activity of spring to come, but deceptively so - leaves are decomposing, returning nutrients to the soil. The newly-planted perennials, the coneflowers, native honeysuckle, wild ginger, and Sweetspire shrubs, spread their roots in the coolness of winter, to be strong against the heat of dry summer. Even though nothing appears to be happening, something is always happening. Life’s processes continue.
Even when we too seem to be lying fallow, quiet, and still like an unplowed field, something necessary may be going on beneath the surface. Perhaps a processing, a healing, or a bubbling up of new ideas, not ready quite yet to break the surface. The wisdom of winter allows us to rest and renew like a fallow field, and to trust the coming of spring.
Thank you so much, Jane, for your reflection.
