The Nashville Humane Association (NHA) is one of the oldest service organizations in Nashville. The roots of NHA can be traced back to a society founded in 1887 to protect children from inhumane working conditions and draft horses from mistreatment. NHA was incorporated in 1946 to protect the wellbeing of animals in Davidson County. Today, the NHA is committed to finding responsible homes, controlling pet overpopulation and promoting the humane treatment of animals. Over 4,000 healthy and temperamentally sound animals are placed each year into loving homes and over 8,000 animals were spayed or neutered throughout our community. While NHA is recognized nationally for our outstanding staff and programs, we are not a government agency or part of a national humane organization. We are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies on donations from individuals, foundations and corporations.

Our programs include:

- PET ADOPTIONS
NHA places healthy and temperamentally-sound, companion cats and dogs into loving homes.

-RESOURCE CENTER
NHA provides information and referrals to individuals with animal-related questions.

-VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
NHA relies on dedicated volunteers and offers opportunities such as dog walking, cat socializing, foster care, clerical tasks and more are available every day.

-TEDDY’S WAGON
NHA travels around Nashville in this mobile unit, with shelter animals looking for their forever home.

-LOST AND FOUND PET SERVICE
NHA provides resources to reunite pets with their owners.

-ROVER/COMMUNITY SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM
NHA offers low cost spay/neuter services to qualifying individuals. Clients simply make an appointment, then bring their pet to NHA or ROVER at one of its convenient, off-site locations.

Recently, the Homeless Commission asked NHA to assist the homeless population in caring for their animals in severe weather, so when under 25 degrees, Rover acts as a warming station set up next to the Metro shelters. This allows us to provide a safe, warm environment for the animals, while the pet owners sleep in a warm bed at night without worry. We were also honored and humbled again to be selected the “Best Non-Profit” and “Best Place to Adopt a Pet”, and we continue to maintain our 4-star charity rating from Charity Navigator, reassuring our donors that we are committed to being good stewards of your funding support.

We could not do it without friends like you to help us to fulfill our mission – THANK YOU ALL for your support!
