Memorial Garden in December

I am guessing that this is Leatherleaf Mahonia (Mahonia bealei). Many gardening books do not include mahonia, perhaps because the leaves are pointed and sharp. Felder Rushing writes in Tough Plants for Southern Gardens that birds get drunk on berries that have frozen, thawed, and then fermented. This "can be a real problem if the stupefied birds can't move enough to stay warm or out of reach of roaming cats." Nevertheless, Mahonia bealei is a "best bet...to be safely enjoyed by mockingbirds, cedar waxwings, blue jays, towhees, cardinals, robins, sparrows, finches, doves, and even woodpeckers."
