Friday, Nov. 8, 2019: Duffy Jackson Trio and refreshments free
We invite you to a FREE event featuring the Duffy Jackson Trio playing jazzy dinner music while you eat some delectable finger-foods (free.) There will be an appearance by silverthroated Jay Slobey. Interspersed there will be discussion about how some people are re-defining religious liberty to deny services because of a “sincerely held” religious belief. Think of the way that blacks could not get served. Now it can be because of a number of things. The pharmacist believes contraceptives are sinful; the florist thinks that same-sex people should not marry; the hospital will not tie your tubes; the innkeeper believes you and your girlfriend don’t deserve a room; the renter believes you should not get an apartment because you have a baby but no husband.
We want you to PROTECT THY NEIGHBOR by taking action against the religious right. In the House of Representatives HR 1450 is called the “DO NO HARM Act.” It would help prevent the U.S. from becoming a mish-mash of places which deny services. It is the right thing to do to treat everyone equally.
That’s what Americans United does - work toward equality before the law. It is not anti-religious to support the separation of religion from government. That principle has enabled religion to thrive in the U.S. versus the situation in Europe. Churches are not taxed. They should not demand privilege or tax funds.
Note: The timing conflicts with the Palmer Lecture.
