Many of our citizens are unfamiliar with the rise of religious nationalism and its effects on religion and our government. In September, The Temple in Nashville hosted a virtual meeting which presented facts from the 2017 book, Democracy in Chains, The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America, by Nancy Maclean. That event was followed up a couple of weeks later by a panel of four discussing the topic. It is about how the Koch brothers and their network of billionaires have gained and are gaining even more power over the government and people of the United States, destroying our environment and our democracy.

Katherine Stewart is an American journalist and author who often writes about issues related to the separation of church and state. Her books include The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children (2012) and The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism (2020).

Over the past four decades, the religious right has achieved remarkable progress toward its longstanding goal of weakening or even destroying public education altogether, while diverting money to conservative Christian schools. The movement’s successes have mounted with the appointment of Betsy DeVos, who stands at the intersection of two family fortunes that helped build the Christian right, and who has singled out education reform as a way to “advance God’s Kingdom." Now, DeVos and her allies in the Trump administration are exploiting the Covid-19 pandemic to divert public money to religious and private schools at the expense of public education.

In this talk, Katherine Stewart will detail the causes and consequences of these efforts, as well as strategies for protecting our children and preserving our democracy. Questions may be posed.
