Topic: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” (Matthew 22:17)

The famous line, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21, King James Version) is not an answer; it is a riddle designed to encourage awareness about where our taxes go and what purpose they serve. The Pharisees’ question about the legality of paying the tax is a good question, since in the Jewish heritage, paying what is in effect the census tax would be contrary to both law and custom. What do we think about taxation given our own heritage in the USA?
