The Nominating Committee is taking nominations for three positions
The Nominating Committee is taking nominations for two positions: Secretary, Member-at-Large, and Treasurer on the GNUUC Board. The position is appropriate for someone who may not have served on the Board previously, or someone who has not served recently. The Secretary position requires good organizational skills, note taking skills, and, ideally, experience with Google docs. The Treasurer position requires a strong background in financial management, with additional experience with church finances preferred. Please forward any questions or nominations to Jesse, jesse.spencersmith@gnuuc.org.
Nathanael Reveal, President of the GNUUC Board, provides this guidance on the role of a Board member (the Secretary and Treasurer has additional responsibilities - talk to Nathanael R. for more information):
1. The board decides issues of policy. This means we read a lot of "how to" guides from the UUA and "best practices" guides for congregational organizations.
2. The board does not address day to day operations of the congregation and does not engage in event planning or program development.
3. The Board follows a model called Governance and Ministry. See https://www.uua.org/leadership/library/governance-and-ministry for an overview.
4. The Board generally follows consensus-based decision making. Consensus is not the same as unanimity. Consensus means working a problem until the underlying truths are understood and a reasonable path forward is clear.
5. The member-at-large position is an introductory position on the board. It is assumed that this person will have a general familiarity with the congregation and unitarian universalism, but not a hands-on understanding of board operations.
6. A member-at-large will be successful if:
a. They have a degree of comfort with Zoom, Google Docs, and Email.
b. They can set aside 1 hour a month to read documents sent out in preparation for the upcoming Board meeting.
c. They can set aside 2 hours a month for a board meeting.
d. Bring a spirit of selflessness to the work. We are servants of the congregational mission. We are not "leaders."
